Traveling with animals should feel seamless, not stressful — here’s what it will take to get there

Since 2022, I’ve been traveling domestically with my support animal, Toshiro.

Today, only one Philippine carrier allows emotional support dog (not pets) onboard domestic flights — a step forward, but one that highlights how early we still are in the journey toward true animal-inclusive travel. (Hello, Cebu Pacific Air!)

The airline staff during my recent trip over the Holy week were professional and courteous. However, the experience also revealed a broader challenge: even with the best intentions, there are still meaningful gaps between published policies and how they are interpreted and enforced on the ground. Despite providing complete documentation, I encountered additional and inconsistent requirements, creating unnecessary stress and uncertainty.

This points to a larger opportunity:

• Animal-inclusive travel should be built on clear, aligned policies — where internal operational guidelines and public-facing instructions match seamlessly. • Systems must balance safety, preparedness, and respect for all — animals, handlers, and fellow passengers — without confusion at the point of service. • Traveling with trained animals should not feel like navigating conflicting rules. It should be a thoughtfully managed experience built on consistency, clarity, and mutual trust.

At the same time, travelers who bring animals onboard must hold themselves — and their animals — to a higher standard. Bringing an animal into shared spaces like aircraft cabins requires serious commitment: proper training, controlled behavior, hygiene, and strict adherence to guidelines. It is critical that the privilege of traveling with animals is not abused.

Mutual respect is key. We must recognize that not all passengers are comfortable around animals, and that true inclusivity means balancing the needs of all travelers responsibly and respectfully.

This is the vision we are working toward at DogHousePH through DogHouse Air. Our goal isn’t simply to offer a dedicated animal-inclusive flight experience — it’s to help demonstrate how responsible, thoughtful animal travel can be designed and scaled across the travel and hospitality ecosystem.

By investing in specialized training, operational planning, and education for all stakeholders, we aim to build a replicable model that airlines, airports, and hospitality providers can eventually adopt. Traveling with animals, when done properly, should not feel confusing or burdensome — it should feel supported, dignified, and seamless.

I would be happy to work alongside airlines, airports, and industry leaders who share this vision. Together, we can build a more inclusive future for human and animal travelers alike.

If you’re equally passionate about making this future a reality, I would love to connect!
