Why Responsible Training Matters: Building Strong Human-Animal Teams

I’ve just completed my first formal training in animal-assisted interventions (AAI) through Communitails, Inc., one of DogHousePH’s trusted partners and an associate member of Animal Assisted Intervention International (AAII). Next up—getting partner animal, assessed and screened, so we can become an official human-animal team. Fingers crossed! First of many certifications, as the learning never stops—especially in a field as young and full of potential as AAI. And if we want to see it grow responsibly, it’s crucial we approach it with the right mindset from the start.

I didn’t pursue this training randomly. It came directly from the mission behind DogHousePH. As we build wellness programs that integrate animals—whether it’s corporate wellness, retreats, or community events—I realized that if we’re serious about doing things right, we need proper standards, certification, and training in place. That meant starting with myself.

My journey with animals goes back further. In 2020, I brought home Toshiro, then a 13-week-old Shiba Inu. Like many during the pandemic, as part of my decision making process in getting a dog, a lifelong commitment, I spent hours reading books, watching countless YouTube training videos, and learning from trainers like Zak George's Dog Training Revolution and Victoria Stilwell, who advocate positive, relationship-based methods. From potty training to obedience, figuring out what made him anxious, to the point where there was a phase he was exclusively eating steak (yes, Toshiro was eating better than me)—I threw myself into learning how to care for him responsibly.

But raising a well-loved pet is one thing. Being part of an animal-assisted intervention program is something else entirely. As interest in therapy dogs and structured animal-assisted programs grows—it’s crucial we shape this field thoughtfully and ethically.

If you’re curious how Doghouse.PH AAI can support workplace wellness, leadership programs, or community well-being, I’d love to chat!
